Aug. 16--The Linux fans who think Michael Dell isn't sufficiently enamored of their favorite computer operating system have incredibly short memories. It wasn't all that long ago that the chairman and chief executive of Dell Computer Corp. wasn't interested at all.

Today, Linux accounts for 10 percent of Dell Computer's sales of server computers. The company's venture capital fund has put money into five prominent Linux start-ups.

And on Tuesday, the Texas entrepreneur who made billions as he defined the direct-to-customer market for personal computers -- a man whose fortunes have been as closely tied to Microsoft's as anyone in the technology world -- gave a keynote speech at the Linux World Conference & Expo in San Jose.
