Flight Attendants Criticize American Airlines, Ask for Mediator.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 20--FORT WORTH, Texas--The leader of American Airlines' unionized flight attendants yesterday said the involvement of a federal mediator in contract talks with the airline won't produce a new deal unless management is prepared to increase its offer.
John Ward, president of the Euless-based Association of Professional Flight Attendants, issued a statement yesterday criticizing American's management for acting "hastily in walking away from the table and asking the (National Mediation) Board to intervene" in the contract talks that stalled out less than two weeks ago.
Management's decision to seek mediation, he said in the statement, "set the clock ticking on a formal process that can make it very difficult to avoid confrontation."
