American Airlines Seeks Federal Mediation in Labor Contract Talks.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 18--American Airlines Inc. said Thursday that it plans to ask for federal mediation in its labor contract talks with the union representing its nearly 23,000 flight attendants.

Separately, pilots at American's regional affiliate, American Eagle, have rejected a tentative agreement that would have amended their existing labor contract for the next four years.

American's request for federal mediation comes a little more than a week after the Association of Professional Flight Attendants declined to meet with the airline for two days of bargaining and said it was evaluating whether to ask for federal mediation. Both sides are at odds over the total amount of money they want the airline to spend on a new contract.
