Aug. 24--New telecommunications equipment being tested in Dallas could bring high-speed Internet access to virtually every Southwestern Bell customer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area within two years, company officials said Wednesday.

SBC Communications, the telephone company's San Antonio-based parent, plans to install Broadband Gateways, which include fiber optics and transmission equipment, in neighborhoods that are more than the old standard of

17,500 feet, or 3.3 miles, from its central offices. Homes and businesses farther away can't get digital subscriber line services at present.
