Verizon Lands Contract with Massachusetts State Government.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 31--Verizon Communications has landed a pioneering three-year contract to provide a "virtual private network" for Massachusetts' state government, which is expected to sharply accelerate telecommuting by state workers and provide secure access to certain databases for companies doing business with the state.
While a number of state agencies offer some of the services now through their own systems, officials said the contract will create the first uniform system for secured, remote access to state computers for thousands of employees and contractors allowed access to certain government databases.
