American Airlines Urges Contract Decision by Pilots.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 31--American Airlines Inc. plans to "immediately make some further commitments for airplanes" if the carrier's nearly 11,000 pilots ratify a tentative one-year labor contract extension next month, American's top executive says.

Donald J. Carty, American's chairman and chief executive, made the announcement in a live Webcast to pilots Tuesday night. He did not reveal any specifics.

If the vote on the tentative contract extension fails, Mr. Carty said, it will "retard the company's ability to grow" and hamper the airline's competitive position.

Should the tentative deal win, American proposes beginning discussions for a new labor contract no later than Aug. 31, 2001.
