FCC to Release Data on Spread of High-Speed Internet Access.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 3--WASHINGTON--Americans are rushing to embrace high-speed Internet access, and once they get a taste of it, they aren't likely to go back to slower dial-up technologies for surfing the World Wide Web.
About 2.5 million U.S. households have high-speed broadband connections. The number is expected to double by year's end -- and double again in 2001, researchers say.
"For the next couple of years, the growth rate will be so fast, I don't know if they're going to be able to keep up," said Bruce Kasrel of Forrester Research Inc., in Cambridge, Mass. "We expect 11 million households by the end of next year."
