Houston Council Allows Continental Airlines to Shine Its Logo on Downtown.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 3--Despite passionate pleas from opponents, City Council on Wednesday voted to allow Continental Airlines to shine its logo on its downtown headquarters.
The 10-4 vote reversed an informal agreement going back at least 30 years as well as a 1993 city ordinance that has largely kept advertising from the tops of Houston's downtown buildings.
The issue provoked heated pleas from opponents, who worried that the revised ordinance would turn the skyline into a blazing jumble of corporate logos.
"There's no real public good," argued Councilman Chris Bell. "The only excuse for doing it is because you're going to be doing it for one major corporation. If that is going to be the standard, you might as well hang up a big `For Sale' sign on City...
