Manufacturing Data Suggest Slower Expansion Rate for Georgias Economy.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 2--Georgia's manufacturing sector is still expanding, but more slowly, in line with a trend that began earlier this year. The latest results of Kennesaw State University's purchasing managers survey show the main index dropped from 54.8 in July to 51.1 in August.

The Georgia data were released after the national purchasing managers index, which showed a drop to 49.5 from 51.8.

The national and state manufacturing indexes are yet more evidence of an economic slowdown. Earlier Friday, the U.S. Labor Department reported total employment dropped in August, but that was due to cutbacks among temporary Census workers and the strike at Verizon Communications. Private employment rose by 17,000.
