Mediator to Assist in American Airlines, Flight Attendants' Contract Talks.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 2--American Airlines Inc. will resume contract talks with its flight attendants' union on Sept. 13 with the help of a federal mediator, the airline said Friday.
American, a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., requested mediation Aug. 18 after talks with the flight attendants broke down over pay, retirement and other key economic issues.
The National Mediation Board appointed Linda Pachula to oversee the negotiations between American and the 23,000-member Association of Professional Flight Attendants.
Ms. Pachula is a former flight attendant at Republic Airlines, now part of Northwest Airlines, and past president of the Association of Flight Attendants, the world's largest flight-attendant union.
