Insulin by Danish Drugmaker to Be Sold under Wal-Mart Brand Name.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 2--A Danish drugmaker will try to chip away at Eli Lilly and Co.'s commanding U.S. market share for insulin by selling its competing product cheaper under a Wal-Mart brand name.

Novo Nordisk said Friday that its insulin will be sold starting this week in all 2,500 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club pharmacies under the retailer's ReliOn brand of diabetes care products.

The Wal-Mart deal marks the first time Novo has marketed its insulin under a retailer's brand and is an attempt to win business from Lilly in its home market.

"Certainly that would be part of our goal," said Novo spokesman Brian Zignego.
