Cruise Port Plans Draw Acclaim, Apprehension at Long Beach, Calif., Meeting.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 6--LONG BEACH, Calif.--Members of the public sounded off to the Port of Long Beach Harbor Commissioners on Tuesday, voicing both concerns and support for a proposed cruise ship terminal in Long Beach.

Expected to draw more than 275,000 tourists to the Queen Mary area each year, the $35 million project will incorporate a Carnival Cruise Lines terminal inside the geodesic dome that once housed the Spruce Goose, a 1,100 foot off-shore pier, a five-story 1,500 space parking structure as well as several other buildings. Construction is expected to begin in early 2001, lasting for just over 13 months.
