BellSouth Promotes Finances Vice President to Lead Consumer Services Unit.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 7--ATLANTA--BellSouth has promoted Isaiah Harris Jr. to president of its consumer services unit, replacing Sue McLaughlin, who has resigned effective Sept. 15.

Harris, who has been vice president for finances, will take responsibility for an 8,500-person group that is the core of the $26 billion-a-year company.

With 14.5 million customers, the unit handles local phone and customer service in nine states. On that turf, BellSouth still has dominance, but is facing increasing competition during a time of technology change in which the Internet is ever-more important.
