Record Labels Win Huge Ruling against Online Music Site MP3.com.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 7--The record labels won another major victory Wednesday in their battle to control the digital evolution of the music business, as a federal judge slapped MP3.com with a staggering penalty for willfully violating Universal Music Group's copyrights.
The penalty imposed by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff -- $25,000 per CD copied, or at least $118 million -- sends another message to dot-com entrepreneurs that they can't build businesses around popular music without the labels' permission. The severity of the ruling gives yet more leverage to the major labels, which have taken their chart-topping artists to the Net at a snail's pace.
