Lucent Unveils Products to Speed Up Internet Access over Copper Phone Lines.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 8--Lucent Technologies, the world's largest phone-equipment manufacturer, yesterday unveiled a couple of new products to speed up Internet access for small and medium-sized businesses on traditional copper phone lines.

The products are smaller and more compact versions of the Stinger, which the Murray Hill company introduced last year in a bid to grab a share of the lucrative digital subscriber line equipment market.

DSL is the telephone industry's answer to surging demand for high-speed access to the Internet, data and phone services over copper lines. The market is expected to grow from $1.6 billion in 1999 to $3.2 billion in 2000, according a Gartner Dataquest report.
