Sep. 10--What is an operating system anyway? As Microsoft rolls out its latest OS, Windows Millennium Edition, let's go back to basics and get clear on what exactly an operating system does.
Mostly, we know the operating system as the software program that gives the computer desktop its aesthetic look, and determines what programs a computer can and cannot run. The Mac OS looks different from Windows for instance, and one can't run the other's software without some tweaking.
But there's more to it than that.
