Aberdeen, S.D.-Area Director Says Management Tower's Move Will Save Money.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 14--Moving a county-maintained emergency management tower will both provide better reception and save money, according to Jesse Luce, emergency management director.

Radio equipment on the tower is used to coordinate communications between county and state agencies during emergencies. It's currently located on land about two miles west of Columbia. But Luce told Brown County commissioners during their regular meeting Tuesday that land was sold about three years ago and the county's lease arrangement was raised from $8 a year to $400 a year. Now, the landowner wants to again hike the fee.
