WorldCom Calls on Verizons Mid-State Pennsylvania Clients.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 14--WorldCom Inc. is offering many midstate residents a package of local and long-distance telephone service for $32.99 a month, becoming the first significant local telephone competitor that Verizon Communications has faced in the state.

That package, branded under the company's former name of MCI WorldCom, includes unlimited local calling and a bucket of 200 minutes for toll and long-distance calls. If more than 200 minutes are used, they will be billed at 7 cents a minute, no matter when calls are made.

No monthly minimum charge, which WorldCom has raised by $1 to $5.95 for some of its long-distance-only plans, is added, and there is no fee for switching service.
