Florida Warns Car Dealers about Recalled Firestone Tire Sales.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 21--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Attorney General Bob Butterworth put 12,000 Florida car dealers on notice Wednesday that they could face stiff fines and the loss of their licenses if they sell Ford Explorers with recalled Firestone tires to unsuspecting buyers.

In an advisory to dealers, Butterworth ordered them to replace any suspect tires before selling a car, or tell buyers in writing that the tires -- 15-inch Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT brands -- are subject to recall. He said his warning was aimed mainly at small used-car lots that operate on small profit margins -- "ABC Used Car-pay here-buy here types of places," he called them.

Butterworth said he was not aware of any such cases. But under Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices...
