Wisconsins Madison Gas & Electric Completes 3.7-Mile Urban Natural-Gas Line.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 20--Madison Gas and Electric Co. has completed a 3.7 mile natural gas line that will bring more gas service Downtown and to UW-Madison.

The $3.3 million, 12-inch wide gas main starts at Freeport Road, behind the Home Depot store off Verona Road. The line travels under the Beltline and follows an abandoned West Side rail corridor that is being converted into a commuter bicycle path, then ends at Walnut Street.

The new line is MGE's largest gas project in Madison in 20 years, said Steve Stehling, manager of gas systems engineering.
