Sewage to Blame for Deadly Yosemite Rockslides, Expert Geologist Contends.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Sep. 23--Treated sewage from the new Glacier Point visitor center may have contributed to two deadly rock falls over the past four years at Yosemite National Park, according to a study that was quickly challenged when presented Friday in San Jose.

Chester F. Watts, an engineering geologist from Radford University in Virginia, said thousands of gallons of sewage, leaking down through cracks in the park's spectacular granite cliffs, could have triggered rock slides that killed two people and injured more than a dozen in 1996 and 1999.

"The causes are geological," Watts said. "The triggering mechanism, it's kind of like the straw that breaks the camel's back."
