Doctors Sue Plantation, Fla., Hospital over Open-Heart Surgery Privileges.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 3--When Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation opened its state-of-the-art open heart surgery program in March, hospital officials granted surgery privileges to only one doctors' group with eight physicians, saying it would lead to better quality care.

But two surgeons excluded from performing open heart operations have filed lawsuits, demanding surgery slots at Westside's open heart program and challenging a longstanding practice by hospitals to enter "exclusive contracts" with physicians.

Doctors Ruben Ungaro of Lauderdale Lakes and Cesar Alegre, of Tamarac, filed their suits last month in Broward Circuit Court. The doctors' complaints say that corporate profits, not concern about patients, drove the hospital's decision to enlist only...
