Memphis, Tenn., EEOC Files Suit Against Northwest Airlines.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 3--The Memphis District Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit Monday against Northwest Airlines Corp., charging the carrier violated the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990.

The suit alleges that the Eagan, Minn.-based passenger carrier intentionally violated federal law when it refused to hire Kevin Armstrong, who has insulin-dependent diabetes, for an equipment service employee position in 1998.

The commission is seeking back pay, compensatory damages for "emotional pain, suffering and inconvenience and mental anguish," punitive damages and any other relief from the court.

The suit asks for a jury trial; it couldn't be readily determined Monday if a date had been set.
