Aberdeen, S.D., Student Loan Guarantor Records Low Default Rate.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 3--An Aberdeen organization that guarantees student loans ranks fourth in the nation for low default rates on these loans, the National Council of Higher Education announced Monday.

Education Assistance Corp., 115 First Ave. S.W., had a rate of 3.2 percent for fiscal 1998, the year for which results were released Monday. The rate is the percentage of borrowers who defaulted on student loans over two years.

EAC improved over last year, when its rate was 3.5 percent for fiscal 1997. Nonetheless, it slipped to fourth place from third because of even greater improvements elsewhere; this year, third place went to a New Hampshire organization with a rate of 2.2 percent.
