SBC Communications, BellSouth Announce Name of Merged Wireless Unit.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 6--SBC Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. want consumers to single out their new wireless company from a field crowded with national and international players.

To that end, the companies announced Thursday that their merged wireless unit is being named Cingular Wireless.

"What we want to do is serve customers one at a time," said Stephen Carter, Cingular's president and chief executive officer. "We will focus less on technology for technology's sake. ... Instead of saying that we have XYZ widget, we will concentrate a little more on what it can do for you."

SBC and BellSouth have merged their 11 wireless brands into Cingular, based in Atlanta, to achieve national coverage, an increasingly important asset in the wireless business....
