New DaimlerChrysler Plant Brightens Economic Outlook for Kokomo, Ind.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 7--Kokomo cemented its immediate economic future Friday with DaimlerChrysler's announcement that it will spend $455 million to build a new transmission plant on the city's outskirts.
The Howard County community should continue prospering under a concentration of good-paying automotive jobs for at least another decade, said Dilip Pendse, an economist at Indiana University-Kokomo.
"It's a matter of pride that a big Fortune 500 company like DaimlerChrysler is willing to invest more and more in Kokomo," Pendse said. "It also brings in greater stability, higher income down the road and higher growth.
"We are talking about a better future and a brighter future" for Kokomo's economy.
