Large-Format Specialty Store Opens in Charleston, S.C.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 9--Don't judge Parisian by size alone: The retailer is not a department store chain, even though its new Citadel Mall location consumes nearly 130,000 square feet on two floors.
"Parisian is a specialty store," stressed Deborah Fowler, a professor of retailing at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where the chain has two mall locations. "It's just sort of a large-format specialty store."
Travis Saucer, Parisian's president and chief executive, probably wouldn't quibble with the professor's description.
"We're a hybrid between a specialty store and a department store," Saucer said. "The No. 1 thing we're focused on is service to the customer."
