Orange County, Calif., Health Care System Plans to Retain Few HMOs.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 14--St. Joseph Health System, Orange County's largest medical provider, said Friday it will drop all but four HMOs next year a move that could force as many 150,000 patients to choose between their doctors and their health plans.

PacifiCare of California, the county's largest HMO company and by far St.

Joseph's biggest business partner is among those that will no longer do business with St. Joseph. PacifiCare has over 114,000 members cared for by St. Joseph doctors and hospitals.

St. Joseph said the move was part of a plan to save money and simpify administration by reducing the number of HMOs it does business with. It has signed new contracts with only four Blue Cross of California, Blue Shield of California, Cigna Healthcare and Aetna...
