Toshiba Settles with U.S. Government over Faulty Laptops.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 14--BEAUMONT, Texas--Toshiba has agreed to pay $23 million in cash as part of a settlement of a lawsuit alleging that the company sold the federal government 60,000 laptop computers with faulty floppy disk controllers.
The settlement, announced by U.S. Attorney Michael Bradford on Friday, includes an additional $10.5 million in coupons good for purchase of Toshiba products. Bradford said federal authorities will auction the coupons because federal purchasing guidelines do not allow for their use.
The government settlement grew out of a class-action lawsuit settlement reached last year. Toshiba agreed to pay $1 billion to $2 billion in total damages to as many as 5 million owners of Toshiba laptop computers sold in the United States since 1985....
