Intel Plans to Unveil Chip for Cell Phone Use.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 16--Intel Corp., continuing its recent push to dominate cellphone technology like it has the personal computer, today will unveil a new cellular chip designed at its Folsom research campus.

The new chip will store memory -- the so-called "flash memory" function -- in cellphones. Intel is already the leader in that field, but the new chip is considered significant because it's a more advanced product aimed at the next generation of cellphones. Those phones are designed to provide smooth, video-friendly Internet access, a major improvement over the limited-text-only Internet service that's currently available.
