Sony Promotes PlayStation Engineer to Company Board.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 24--Before PlayStation became a household brand, it was an idea that belonged to Ken Kutaragi, who at the time in 1989 was an engineer at Sony Corp.

Lucky for Sony that the idea hadn't occurred to someone else working at Sony, because most of its employees would have given up after their bosses nixed the notion as a worthless toy.

Not Kutaragi. He threatened to resign if they didn't back his project. Not wanting to lose a talented engineer, Sony's then-CEO Norio Ohga ultimately gave Kutaragi the green light.
