Congress Looks to Study Safety of Coal Waste Dams.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Oct. 21--A Kentucky congressman wants to provide federal money for scientists to study the safety of coal waste dams across Appalachia and in other states.
Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Ky., has proposed a nine-month independent review by the National Academy of Sciences.
Rogers hopes to insert $2 million for the study into the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's budget for next year.
"We need to address this issue in as quick a way as possible to prevent recurrence of this type of catastrophic event," Rogers said Friday.
"In an effort to address the long-term impact of this event, I believe it would be wise for us to examine the broader issue of properly containing coal waste," Rogers said. "We should draw on the expertise of an...
