Oct. 23--SUBSCRIPTION FEES PAY OFF FOR AOL: More than a few experts shook their heads when Fort Lauderdale's AOL Latin America announced that its main revenue source would be subscription fees. After all, free Internet service was being offered all over the continent. "Won't last," AOLA execs predicted.

Recently, their prediction received a big boost when Universo Online announced in Brazil that it was abandoning its NetGratuita, which supposedly had 3 million subscribers. (See Page 21.)

AOLA Chief Exec Charles Herington says the company's subscriber base doubled, and its average user is online 30 minutes a day -- a huge figure considering that most Latin American phone customers are charged by the minute, even for local calls.
