Oct. 27--Batting leadoff in AT&T Corp.'s Project Grand Slam: AT&T Wireless Group, a business with the kind of stats to make fans swoon.

The unit will be the first spun off under the self-imposed breakup plan unveiled by AT&T this week, and just look at these numbers:

Sales of wireless calling plans and cell phones accounted for nearly $2 billion, or 69 percent, of the $2.9 billion in revenue gains posted by AT&T in this year's first nine months.

In each of the past three quarters, wireless revenue growth has ranged from dizzying to euphoria-inducing: 32 percent to 41 percent.
