Oct. 30--When Craig Mundie went to work for Microsoft Corp. eight years ago, he didn't have the most envied job at the software giant. "I went there to start all the non-PC businesses," Mr. Mundie said. "In 1992, that was clearly not a very interesting thing to be doing at Microsoft."
But today, with Microsoft in its 25th year of operation -- making it an old New Economy company -- and the personal computer world devolving into a loose federation of high-speed networks, handheld devices and Internet appliances, Mr. Mundie might just have one of the most important jobs at Microsoft. His title is senior vice president of advanced strategies, and he reports to Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect.
