Napster Strikes a Deal with Record Label to Offer Fee-Based Online Music.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 1--In a stunning reversal of fortune, Napster, the outlaw-pirate of the music world, has agreed to a deal with one of the industry's most established players to offer music online for a fee.
Under terms announced Tuesday, the website will charge listeners to hear songs owned by the German conglomerate Bertelsmann, the fourth largest music producer in the world with artists such Britney Spears and Carlos Santana.
When Napster starts charging, Bertelsman will drop its lawsuit against the Internet upstart, which has attracted 38 million users in less than a year who download music for free.
On its website, Napster told its fans that "we'll work to transform Napster into a membership-based service that preserves the Napster experience....
