Sprint PCS to Unveil Phone That Plays MP3 Music Files.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 2--Sprint PCS, the national wireless phone company, unveiled a new $400 phone yesterday that lets subscribers load up to an hour's worth of MP3 music to listen to over plugged-in stereo headphones.

The service will take some effort: Users will have to transfer songs from their compact discs to computers to a Web site run by Seattle-based HitHive.com. The site can handle up to 2 gigabytes per user, or about 800 songs total.

Then, using a cable plugged from the phone to the USB port of the computer, users could transfer up to an hour's worth of music, or 64 megabytes, from the Web site into a memory chip inside the $400 Samsung Uproar phone.
