Nov. 6--OAKLAND, Calif.--In a classic Dilbert cartoon, the eponymous hero is sitting in his cubicle, proclaiming, "I am the king of my cubicle, the absolute ruler of this tiny realm."

Cubicles -- love 'em or hate 'em, they are an integral part of the technology workplace. Stories pour forth at the very mention of the word "cubicle."

Did you hear about the cubicles in Building 21 at Netscape? There's a 35-foot replica of the Golden Gate Bridge made of old soda cans spanning the cubicles with a model train running over the bridge. What will those clever engineers think of next?

That's why Hewlett-Packard Corp. caused a minor stir in Silicon Valley recently when it decided to "reconfigure" its cubicles into a "next generation workplace."...
