Verizon Explains Request for Shortened Pennsylvania Long-Distance Timetable.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 7--Verizon Communications Corp.'s push for a shortened timetable to seek permission to offer long-distance telephone service in Pennsylvania is related to regaining control of Genuity Inc., a data subsidiary it spun off to get FCC approval of the Bell Atlantic Corp.-GTE Corp. merger that created Verizon last summer.

Harry Mitchell, a spokesman for Verizon, said Monday that regaining control of Genuity was part of the reason for Verizon's request to the state Public Utility Commission last week for a shorter period to seek long-distance approval from the Federal Communications Commission. However, he said Verizon is more concerned with being able to offer long-distance service so it can better serve customers in Pennsylvania.
