Tustin, Calif., City Council Meeting Discusses AT&T Rate Increase.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 7--TUSTIN, Calif.--More than 200 cable subscribers packed City Council chambers Monday night to complain about a 26 percent rate increase.

City officials have threatened to ax the franchise contract with AT&T, which plans to raise the rates for more than 9,000 cable customers, who would need to purchase converter boxes and remote controls for each of their television sets.

Fee increases, outdated cable boxes and poor customer service top the complaint list of residents who spoke at the meeting.

"This is just revenue enhancement for AT&T," said Janet Eason.

"They talk about intricate, complicated technology like we're a bunch of boobs who can't understand it."
