Roanoke County, Va., Transportation Company Buys Window Maker.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 7--A Roanoke County transportation company has bought a 53-year-old Salem window manufacturer in what initially seems to be an unlikely pairing.
But officials of Lawrence Transportation Systems and Rusco Window Co. contend the two firms have more in common than meets the eye.
"There's a lot more synergy than you can see at first glance," Jim Brock, Rusco president, said Monday. "The more we looked at it, it made a lot of sense."
Lawrence purchased Rusco, which makes and sells vinyl windows, for an undisclosed amount. The transportation company will provide shipping services for Rusco's windows, while the acquisition will help Lawrence diversify, a Lawrence spokesman said.
