Nov. 12--Very quietly, Thomas Cooper & Co. Inc. has placed itself among health insurance giants like Cigna and Blue Cross Blue Shield -- at least in the Lowcountry.
The third-party administrator of health insurance plans has more than 52,000 customers in the area, making it a major player in the local insurance market.
Not bad for a company with 21 employees.
But namesake and owner, Thomas Cooper, believes the small size of his company is a benefit, not a hindrance, and a big reason why it has been able to attract so many members. With little of the corporate bureaucracy that can drive up costs at other insurers, Cooper believes his company can sell health benefits to employers at a lower price.
