Nov. 17--WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Worried about turning Broadway Plaza into an after-hours fortress, city officials are jousting with Macy's over the store's plans to install solid steel security doors.
The retractable metal doors are part of Macy's company-wide push to protect its jewelry and other valuable merchandise from late-night burglars.
"We've suffered millions of dollars in losses throughout the company in recent years," said Steve Hutchins, Macy's senior vice president. "We think we're vulnerable in Walnut Creek."
City planners adamantly oppose the idea, saying it runs contrary to the pedestrian-friendly design of Walnut Creek's downtown retail district, the heart of which is Broadway Plaza.
