Southwest Pilots Envious of United Airlines Pact.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 16--A lucrative new labor contract between United Airlines Inc. and its pilots is arousing wage envy among Southwest Airlines pilots whose 10-year contract doesn't become amendable until 2004, the head of the Southwest pilots union said in a recent interview.
"The pilots are a little agitated at the moment," said John Kramer, president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association. "They are very anxious to negotiate pay rates before 2004."
A spokesman for the Dallas-based carrier said Wednesday that the union has not approached the airline on the subject. He also noted that while United's wage increases are dramatic, the airline does not offer as much in the way of stock options or profit sharing as Southwest does.
