Virginia Utility Earmarks $1.2 Billion to Cut Emissions over 12 Years.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 17--Virginia Electric Power Co. will spend $1.2 billion over 12 years to greatly reduce sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions at eight coal-fired power plants in West Virginia and Virginia, officials announced Thursday.
VEPCO also agreed to pay a $5.4 million fine and fund another $13.9 million in environmental projects.
The company operates two West Virginia plants -- the Mount Storm plant and the North Branch plant, both in Grant County.
Government officials said they hoped that other power companies across the Midwest and South would settle similar suits over their air pollution emissions.
