Nov. 19--CHARLOTTE, N.C.--As the procession of 43 supercharged stock cars rumbles around Lowe's Motor Speedway, 130,000 delirious fans rise and roar.

At the green flag, the $20 million cars thunder into the first turn. As they approach 200 miles per hour, the sound is deafening. It drowns out the roar of the crowd.

This is NASCAR, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, the fastest-growing sport in the United States during the 1990s.

This is noise. This is speed and danger. This is a sport rooted in the Old South embraced today by the working class and super-rich alike.

But with falling television ratings, slowing merchandise sales and flat attendance, this is also a sport in trouble as this year's Nascar season concludes...
