Library of Congress to Get Old Coca-Cola TV Commercials.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 29--ATLANTA--Coca-Cola Co. is handing over copies of its 20,000 old TV commercials for preservation at the Library of Congress.

The donation is the largest by a corporation and will include five decades of ads. Most likely, the archive will be used by scholars, although some ads can be seen online.

"This is an extraordinary collection," said James Billington, the librarian of Congress. "It's going to have a lot of interest for future scholars." The gift is to be announced tonight.

Patrick Loughney, head of the moving image section of the library, said old TV ads are valuable bits of history, although they're often neglected.

"Too many corporations and advertising companies do not regard this material as worth saving," he said....
