Space Shuttle Carries Lockheed Martin Solar Energy Converter.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 1--Soaring from Earth aboard Space Shuttle Endeavor Thursday night, a team of astronauts is about to visit the orbiting International Space Station to fix a chronic electrical shortage, and most of the world should soon be able to see their work.

In the shuttle's cargo bay is the largest structure ever to be deployed in space -- the first of eight massive solar arrays, built by Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space Systems in Sunnyvale, that will convert sunlight into electricity for the space station.

Sometime Sunday afternoon, when the astronauts unfurl the huge blue-and-gold solar sail, the space station will become the third-brightest object in the night sky, surpassed only by the moon and the star Sirius.
