Madison Gas & Electric to Raise Electric, Natural-Gas Rates.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Nov. 30--Madison Gas and Electric Co. customers will pay more for power and heat starting Jan. 1.

The state Public Service Commission this week approved a $7.6 million electric rate increase and $3.4 million natural gas rate increase.

As a result, the average residential electric customer will pay $2 more, raising bills from the current $52 a month to $54 a month.

The average residential natural gas customer also will pay $2 a month more, hiking the current $58 bill to $60 a month.

With energy demand in Wisconsin on the rise, the cost of buying electricity from other utilities is higher, MGE treasurer Jeff Newman said. MGE buys about 20 percent of the power it needs from other sources.
