Dec. 4--DETROIT--You're driving at night on a quiet road. The car grazes a deer, careens into a tree, knocks you out. Someone finally happens by and calls the police.

Every year, thousands of accidents occur in out-of-the-way places. Often an hour or more passes before the injured receive emergency care, a time lapse that can be fatal.

It may sound far-fetched, but an automobile mayday alert that automatically summons help in emergencies is nearly at hand.

In a test recently concluded at Buffalo, N.Y., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had fitted 3,000 vehicles with Automatic Collision Notification gear.
